Just two years ago, Monisha Gutierrez was shot at close range by a young woman undergoing a gang initiation. Initially told she’d never walk again, she rehabilitated herself and then found a new career as a Community Health Worker. Her life experience enables Monisha to bring both compassion and inspiration to the patients she serves.
Clara Luz Nunez is a Community Health Worker in urban Los Angeles. When her parents, who she brought here from Mexico, passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease and cancer, she found her calling in life: compassionate care and support for seriously ill patients. As a bilingual health worker, Clara brings her experience maneuvering the healthcare system and dealing with cultural challenges to the outstanding care she provides.
The Worker Education and Resource Center offers the LA EMT Program for the first time in conjunction with Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas’ office. The program offers low income and at-risk youth a path to success, giving them the necessary training to become professional EMTs.
